I’d like to try installing this mod but I’m still on phpBB version 3.03. I understand this is the appropriate version?

I downloaded 3.0.10 from this page however the root folder contains the original phpBB files to replace rather than an xml file containing the changed code. I prefer the xml file since many of my original phpBB files have since been heavily modified (hence being stuck on 3.03).

First off, am I looking at the right version of the SEO mod? (Specifically, I’m just looking for the url rewrite capability).

Second, is there a download package that contains changes to existing phpBB files rather than replacement file?

I highly recommend upgrading to the latest version of phpBB(SEO). This is what you're looking for Ultimate SEO URL v0.7.0.
I'm not positive the mod is compatible with such an outdated forum software though.

I did try 0.7.0 however there were too many differences in the coding. In particular, phpBB 3.03 doesn’t even have a web.cfg file (if I recall the file name correctly).

Is there an earlier version of phpBB(SEO) that might be compatible with phpBB 3.03?

The older versions are not available in the download section AFAIK and I don't have a copy on my my computer.
If it's important to you I can ask in the team forum for an older version compatible with phpBB 3.0.3.

SEO rewrite is something I’ve always wanted to implement but never got around to. But the popularity of rewrite is making my phpBB url’s look more and more antiquated. I’ve confirmed with my host that my server running Apache has the mod_rewrite enabled so everything else is all set.

Upgrading is an option – in fact, I was just going over the 3.0.3 to 3.0.10 changelog. It just seems like an incredibly cumbersome exercise.
