It was a major hassle migrating to version 3, but it was worth it, if only for the performance boost.

I know some forums that are still on very early versions on phpbb2 and have never done a single update.

Moving to phpbb3 would be a major hassle for me.

Problem here is php4, and how long are we going to be able to use it.

At some point it will probably be a must to go for php5 unless you run a dedicated server and want to keep a non maintaned version of php.

The alternative would be to use the php5 phpBB2, but it may not be necessarily this easy to migrate from phpBB2 to the php5 phpBB2 so ... at least giving a shot converting to phpBB3 seems wise ;)

Oh sh!t, looks like I may have to upgrade at some point then

I am on a dedicated server, which already was on php5, but it had to be changed back to 4 for phpbb2 to work.

There are so many mods installed on my board that it will be a real shame to have to update to phpbb3 and loose them all

Many mods could become useless with phpBB3, especially the admin/user mods. For scripts that would add pages to phpBB, some could be pretty easy to port, but for sure it's some work.
See this as an occasion to do an even better site ;)

Maybe not is so hurry.

i have made one phpbb2.023 that is depending on the paypal mod scubscriptions for customer

I think I have checked this much mod phpbb and it does look like it is work all ok on php5

Some quotes From phpbb.com

phpBB 2.0.23 will run on most PHP5 installations.
(It's not guaranteed to run on all, phpBB3 was designed for PHP5 compatibility>)

One way of finding out is installing Xampp on your computer and then install a copy of your liveboard on your own computer. Xampp has a php version switcher that allows you to run on either php4 or php5. This way you can check all your boards' functions on both php4 and php5 before changing your liveboard to the new server.

Everything is said in the "all". For sure, if everything works, it woks, but on the other hand, there is no guarantee so problem is, really testing everything could be more work than just converting, and you'd need to do it with every update of the php5 version on your host ...
