Well, I don't think you can revert before you upgrade ;)

Time will come, don't worry ;)

Has anyone here tried the tool to convert their board from phpbb2 to phpbb3 yet?

I tried it last night on a copy of my database and the conversion started, then just hung. I've viewed the phpbb3 database in phpMyadmin and it seems that it starts converting some tables, then just stops at the same point each time. :(

Nobody else seems to have reported the same bug so far, so I'm wondering if any of the mods I have added from here might be the problem. I have advanced mod rewrite, zero dupe, Google sitemaps. Do any of those make changes to the database, dcz, I can't remember off the top of my head?

I'll try a vanilla phpbb version later and see if the converter manages with that.

nope, the phpBB SEO mods do not alter DB, well, the map modules does, but they only add a table supposedly ignored by the update tool.

Noticed the last post links ?

About the simple version, don't worry, once the advanced is up and running, the mixed and simple are very easy to release.

Are you assuming a root folder install? For example:

http://phpbb3.phpbb-seo.net/another-tes ... y-t10.html

if installed in forums would be:

http://phpbb3.phpbb-seo.net/forums/anot ... y-t10.html

I've thought about injecting forum titles and topic titles into topic URLs, but it can make for HUUUUUUGE URLs. I know phpBB3 has the forum ID and topic ID for each topic, but the forum ID is optional.

You're right, but as you said, it's a matter of cases and type of use.

We can imagine many more URL standard such as :

/f4/a-scticky-t10.html or /a-scticky-f4-t10.html when injecting titles in topic URLs.

And several mixed mod too :

forum-title-fxx/topicyy.html or forum-title-fxx-tyy.html

And same for simple :

forumxx/topicyy.html or why not topic-fxx-tyy.html

The advanced as demonstrated so far is only the common base required for all these, once it will be stable, developping the other will be really fast ;)

The best SEO-wise and user friendly may be a root install with the forum names injected w/o number:

http://phpbb3.phpbb-seo.net/another-tes ... y-t10.html

Since there is a fixed number of forums, they could be pattern matched in .htaccess to their f=nn numbers. No performance penalty, easier to read, potential SEO benefit.

You're very right, and this I was already thinking about.

Once the releases will be started, I plan to add a cache add on, able to build a formatted forum title cache, with or without ids, where we will be able to dissociate forum title and urls manually.
This will allow to degrade to the normal title formatting method when one of the forum title would miss in the cache.

By the way, the zero dupe is up and running on http://phpbb3.phpbb-seo.net/ ;)

rc8?

Postby CentaurAtlas » Sun Dec 09, 2007 2:04 pm

Hi,
Is anyone running this on rc 8? I just went from 2.0.21 to 3.0.0 rc 8 a week ago and now that I am confident I didn't mess it up too badly, I wanted to add this, but thought I'd ask first!

Thanks!
