You can just upload the .htaccess at first if you want, the links won't be rewritten, but you'll be able to test if a rewritten link would work, by just loading it manually in your browser, try url like postxx.html where xx is an actual post if, memberxx.html, title-txx.html for topics, if all works, you'll just need to upload the php file modded again.
