Firstly pardon me for my total ignorance. As you will see I am a complete novice at this.

I am having trouble when I get to the .htaccess file part.

I have a site that is set up as such: "mydomain.com" (blog) and "mydomain.com/forum" (forum)

I already have a .htaccess file which obviously was included with the blog software (Wordpress)

The .htaccess file reads:

I am just coying this directly and putting it onto the existing .htaccess folder.

If I allow the re-writing all I get is 404 error from any page. The index page is fine but if I try to access any page all does is go to 404 error page. the URL have gone from looking like this:

"http://www.mydomain.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=4"

to

"http://www.mydomain.com/forum/forum34.html which is an error 404."

Well you are going to have to merge the two .htaccess files. A good rule of thumb is that other entries should go after the phpBB-SEO entries but that is not always the case. Also you wouldn't want duplicate entries like your "RewriteBase /".
