For future reference my problem was fixed by updating my en-us language pack's common.php with the code from the en language pack's common.php as detailed here.
That was the problem. I'm using the en-us language pack as default. When I imported the code you pointed out from the en language pack into the en-us language pack's common.php, it fixed the problems. Thanks!

My phpBB site ( IPtalk.pro ) currently displays as the title of its index page "IPtalk.pro - IPtalk.pro". I would like it to read "IPtalk.pro - the intellectual property message board". Is this possible, and if so, what do I need to do to change it? I'm running the latest premod.

Well, I can see .htaccess files in other directories, where they appear slightly grayed, so I don't think that's the problem. (I'm using WinSCP as my client.)
