I will upgrade to phpbb3, I'll set a phpbb3 private board and mod it (slowly ) and when Im done I'll delete the current phpbb2 board and make the v3 public.

I am no expert in apache but I believe if you get a 500 that means something is wrong with your .htaccess. Do you have mod_rewrite activated?

did you edit the .htaccess when installing the mod?
the zero dupe won't solve your link problem
