Sounds like you don't have the access file set up correctly.

Did you make sure to create an access file and pasted the data in the root of your site?

go to your ACP -> phpBB SEO Tab -> Under URL Rewriting settings you will see .htaccess, generate one and add it to the root of your site!

You should be able to keep all your content, as that is stored in your database. I would recommend that you download the premoded version, and install it on a different path.. example site.com/version2/
