The Google Search Engine uses a Ranking system, named PageRank, for every URL listed in it's data centers.

This Rank is basically a rating given to every explored URL.

PageRank depends on many criteria and is supposed to reflect how important is your content in comparison with other possible search results on a specific search query.

Google PageRank (PR) is taking into account both external and internal linking.
The first kind is used to measure how "important" is your site, the second kind to find out which page are the most important within your site.
And since PageRank (PR) is defined as the probability one have to be visiting your page at a given time, it also greatly depend on the way your site is linked to himself.

The more links to a page, the more probability to be visiting it.

The web site Global Ranking (Home page's PR) as well depend the way PageRank (PR) was transmitted through out all other pages. The more and the better Ranked Page you will have, the greater will you home's PR be.
